During the first semester of the 2010/2011 academic year, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria welcomes more than 600 students, who are participating or will do so in the different mobility programmes offered by the ULPGC (Erasmus, Sicue, Latin-America – USA and Free Movers). The countries of origin of the majority of our exchange visitors are: Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, France, Austria, Belgium, United Kingdom, Rumania, Portugal, Mexico, Switzerland, Slovenia, Finland, Holland, Argentina, Denmark, Czech Republic, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica, USA and Greece. The Department of the Vice-President for International and Institutional Relations of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has, as usual, organised a number of activities for the Welcome Week for exchange students from Europe, Latin America and the USA who are going to study at the ULPGC each semester.

Grants for Excellence

A total of 68 students from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were awarded Grants for Excellence by the Regional Government of the Canary Islands to the most brilliant students, out of a total of 100 grants convened for alumni of the universities of the Canary Islands.

The grants are offered to students who have obtained an average mark of between 8 and 8.5, have passed all the subjects or credits for which they have registered and are still studying in the public universities of the Canary Islands. The grant is for 3,000 euros.

Observaempleo (Observaemployment)

The Department of the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Complementary Activities of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has published the second edition of the Observaempleo digital newsletter. Published twice a year, the aim of the newsletter is to disseminate information and data among the University Community about finding a job.

The information given indicates that the unemployment rate among the general population is double that of those people with university qualifications, although there are some exceptions. Moreover, unemployment among university graduates never exceeds 15%, the average for Spain standing at 11%. IN the Canary Islands, the rate is even lower, at 10.45% for men and 10.69 for women, which demonstrates the importance of holding a degree when looking for a job.

The Department of the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Complementary Activities has set up the ULPGC Entrepreneur Programme (Programa Emprende ULPGC), based on agreements with a range of public and private institutions such as the Employment Service of the Canary Islands, Bancaja Foundation, the University Foundation of Las Palmas, the Industrial Organisation School (EOI, in Spanish) and the Economic Promotion Society of the Island Council of Gran Canaria, which runs programmes to set up and consolidate businesses, as well as to draw up teaching and training material or hold national meetings and working sessions for entrepreneurs.
