The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the Spanish universities with the highest levels of demand from exchange students wishing to complete part of their university studies here. Each year, the ULPGC receives some 700 students through the different mobility programmes offered.

The Department of the Vice-President for International and Institutional Relations of the ULPGC, Rosario Berriel Martínez, is in charge of organising the welcome activities for these students, which include information sessions about services and the University in general, as well as a wide-ranging programme of leisure activities including tours, trips, parties, etc. There is also a Student Mentor Scheme, in which ULPGC students act as mentors for the young foreigners, helping them to find accommodation, find their way around both the city and the university services.
The ULPGC also hands out an all-encompassing guide to all new students. This guide includes information of interest, such as the addresses of consulates, information about the university, university residences, the network of municipal libraries, the main cultural events held in the city or the public transport services that serve the different campuses.

In the 2008-2009 academic year, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the ULPGC, the Garden of Nations was inaugurated, representing a new space that pays tribute to exchange students and their home countries. The Garden of Nations is located in the gardens behind the ULPGC’s institutional headquarters (Rectorado) and houses a sculpture showing the flags of all those countries that have exchange agreements for students. The sculpture is the work of Juan Correa and it comprises different mobile modules integrating the international flags.

The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Agency Executive Agency of the European Union has granted the ULPGC the Erasmus University Charter, which is valid until 2013. The Charter is a basic requisite for the exchange of students between European or associated universities.
